Money

You are almost certain to make more money in sales than in technical or administrative jobs. Companies need to make sales in order to survive, and usually reward highly successful sales people, to ensure that they stay in the job. And this is reasonable: the better sales person, the more he will earn. For many people, this is often the main reason why a sales career is initially chosen.

Route in management

Most chief executives and senior managers have either started their careers or have at least spent some time in their careers in sales. It makes you appreciate what happens on the customer interface ‘on the fast end’. Very few purely technical people come in the top ranks. No matter what business you work in, you spend a lot of your time selling. Selling ideas to your bosses, your associates, your juniors, your suppliers and your customers. To spend some time in sales trains and prepare you to communicate effectively and win friends and impress people.

Personal control

Generally, you can control your time. You make your own appointments, and run your day in the same way that you think is appropriate. As long as you are producing the necessary results for your boss, you can do more or less what you want.

In commission related work, the more you sell the more money you make. The harder you work, the more you sell. The longer you work, the more you sell. The smarter you work, the more you sell. The more you learn, the more you sell.

Job security

Successful sales of companies are unlikely to make them redundant. At least not before most other types of employees. Getting a new job is relatively easy if you lose your job, or choose to leave it, which can demonstrate a ‘track record’ of success in sales. A successful sales person should always be able to get a job and make a living.

Be variable

As a sales person, you will blend in with a wide variety of other people in your industry. You will be better informed about the changes and opportunities in your market. By having better knowledge, you will be better prepared to face sudden changes that may affect you positively or negatively.

Fun at work

Sales are primarily about relationships between business people. It is about helping other people achieve their goals, and solve their problems by presenting your company’s products / services. It is not about forcing other people to buy things they do not want. It is about working hard to discover the places where your company’s products / services will be useful (and valuable), have to clearly understand what the other party wants and needs, and then provide it is working hard to do.

To solve people’s problems in this way, will earn their united gratitude (and their payment!). You get a real sense of being useful to people. In the end, this is why a sales career often lands as being a long-term option for many people.
